Koppert Cress’s climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), A clear and measurable path towards net-zero by 2036

Climate targets only become truly meaningful once it is clear what an organisation intends to reduce, when this will happen and how progress will be measured.

SBTi is an international organisation that helps companies set climate targets in line with the latest climate science. It assesses whether these targets are clear, measurable and sufficiently ambitious. Koppert Cress’s climate targets have now been validated by the SBTi. This means it has been independently established that the targets are consistent with the scientific agreements aimed at limiting climate change as much as possible.

This validation fits perfectly with Koppert Cress’s climate strategy. On World Environment Day (June 5th, 2026), the company announced that it would operate in a climate-positive manner from January 1st, 2026. Koppert Cress is therefore already taking responsibility for its climate impact. At the same time, the systematic reduction of its own emissions and those within the supply chain remains the top priority. The SBTi targets give concrete form to this reduction. They set out exactly how much Koppert Cress will reduce its emissions, in which parts of the organisation and supply chain, and within what timeframe.

Koppert Cress has committed to reducing its absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 100 percent by 2030 compared with the base year 2023. Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from the company’s own operations, such as gas consumption. Scope 2 refers to emissions associated with purchased energy, such as electricity. 

The company has already achieved this reduction in scope 1 emissions by switching entirely to geothermal energy since February 2026 and no longer using gas. Scope 2 emissions have also been zero for many years, as the company purchases 100% green electricity from European wind farms. 

For scope 3, Koppert Cress aims to reduce absolute emissions by 63 percent by 2030 compared to 2023. Scope 3 covers other emissions in the value chain. These include purchased products and materials, transport and other activities that take place outside the company’s direct operations. 

The ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero (greenhouse gas emissions) across the entire value chain by 2036. Net-zero means that an organisation first reduces its emissions as much as possible. For Koppert Cress, this means a reduction of at least 90 percent in scope 3 emissions compared with 2023. In addition, the company will maintain the full reduction of scope 1 and 2 emissions. Net-zero is therefore primarily about preventing and reducing emissions, whilst neutralising any remaining emissions. Koppert Cress already offsets its emissions (climate-positive status), but this is no substitute for reduction. 

With SBTi validation, Koppert Cress’s climate targets become concrete and verifiable. Employees, customers, suppliers and other partners can see what reduction the company aims to achieve and within what timeframe. 

These targets require more than just changes within the organisation itself. Collaboration with suppliers and supply chain partners is also essential. All emissions fall within scope 3 and arise from the production, transport and use of products and services throughout the value chain. 

The validated targets: 

• Koppert Cress commits to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2036. 
• Koppert Cress commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 100.0% by 2030 from a 2023 base year. 
• Koppert Cress commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 63.0% by 2030 from a 2023 base year. 
• Koppert Cress commits to maintain a minimum 100.0% absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions reduction from 2036 through 2036 from a 2023 base year. 
• Koppert Cress commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90.0% by 2036 from a 2023 base year.
