Koppert Cress received geothermal energy from 'Aardwarmte Polanen' for the first time in early 2026. This marks a crucial step for the horticultural company in its transition to a completely fossil-free energy supply.
 
Thermal energy is supplied via the 'Warmtenetwerk Westland' pipeline network at a supply temperature of up to 89 degrees Celsius and can be used directly in the current energy supply. The heat is extracted from a geothermal well at a depth of 2.3 kilometres. The capacity of this source is comparable to the average heat consumption of approximately 24,000 households.

Energy and climate specialist Bart Kouwenhoven is proud of the first delivery: ‘We have been working towards this for a long time. From today, our greenhouses will structurally use less natural gas. This shows once again how cooperation and innovation reinforce each other in the energy transition.’
 
Koppert Cress is one of 23 participants receiving sustainable heat via Aardwarmte Polanen. Aardwarmte Polanen is a collaboration between HVC, WNW and Warmtecoöperatie Polanen. The heat cooperative consists of 50 greenhouse horticulture companies located in the area between Monster, 's-Gravenzande and Naaldwijk. The project provides reliable, local heat for both greenhouse horticulture and homes and demonstrates how collective solutions at the regional level contribute to making greenhouse horticulture more sustainable.
 
With this development, Koppert Cress confirms its ambition to be a pioneer in sustainable and future-proof greenhouse horticulture. This is not the end goal, but it is a necessary step towards cultivation that does not rely on the use of fossil fuels.
